Don’t Get Stuck with Inhumane Glue Traps: Humane Solutions for Mice

Their desperate attempts to free themselves often lead to self-inflicted injuries like torn skin, broken bones, and even self-amputation.

Indiscriminate Killers: These traps don’t target specific pests; they indiscriminately ensnare anything that touches them, including non-target animals like birds, lizards, and even beneficial insects.

Lingering Environmental Hazards: Discarded glue traps pose a threat to wildlife even after use. Animals can become stuck on them after they’ve been thrown away, and the toxic chemicals used in the adhesive can leach into the environment.
Removing a Stuck Animal (If Absolutely Necessary):
If you are in the unfortunate situation of finding an animal stuck in a glue trap and wish to release it, please follow these steps. WARNING: This process will be stressful for both the animal and yourself. If you’re uncomfortable, contact a wildlife rehabilitation center for assistance.
- Wear thick gloves and a mask: Protect yourself from potential bites and diseases.
- Prepare a container: Fill a container with vegetable oil (not mineral oil).
- Soak the adhesive: Gently pour oil around the trapped animal, avoiding contact with its eyes and nose.
- Be patient: Wait for the oil to loosen the glue. This may take some time.
- Gently free the animal: Once the glue loosens, carefully remove the animal using a spoon or spatula.
- Release or seek help: If the animal appears healthy, release it outdoors far from your home. If injured, contact a wildlife rehabilitation center immediately.
Humane Alternatives for Mouse Control:
Thankfully, there are many humane and effective ways to control mice without resorting to cruelty. Here are a few options:
- Exclusion: Seal up any potential entry points around your home with caulk, steel wool, or other appropriate materials. This is our specialty!
- Live traps: Capture mice humanely and relocate them far from your property.
- Snap traps: Choose traps designed to kill quickly and minimize suffering.
By choosing humane alternatives, you can protect your home from unwanted pests while respecting the lives of all creatures. Yes, mice carry diseases and damage our homes and food, but they don’t deserve to be subjected to torture.
